Reading at SJS
At Saltersgate, we want to nurture a love of reading and promote enjoyment in a variety of ways. For example, we participate in the Doncaster Book Awards, where previous events have led us to The Dome, theatre experiences in Cast and book signings with famous authors and celebrities such as Dermot O'Leary, Julian Clary and Liz Pichon. Children who join our book club all have the opportunity to earn free 'swim and skate' vouchers for submitting book reviews and can share in discussion and debates with authors, illustrators and classes across the borough.
We follow the PM Benchmarking reading scheme in school. Children are individually assessed and then allocated a book suitable for their reading ability. Within each coloured band are a selection of fiction and non-fiction books so that learners can choose a book they would like to read. We expect and encourage children to read to adults at home at least 4 times a week, and we hear children read in school on a regular basis. We hold weekly reading raffles, with prizes for for pupils who complete their reading homework.
Each teacher shares a class novel with their children each term or half term to engage and inspire them and the children love sharing this reading time with their class. Previous books include: Who Let the Gods out by Maz Evans (Year 3); How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell (Year 4); Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (Year 5) and Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman (Year 6)
