Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)
Throughout school we follow the No Nonsense Spelling Scheme to support pupils to develop, learn and embed their spelling skills using a variety of strategies. Evidence has shown that pupils learn in different ways and at different speeds and we have found that utilising a range of strategies allows learners to choose the one best suited for them.
Spellings are taught and revisited throughout the week in short burst activities and linked to topic lessons where appropriate. Weekly spelling tests help the children to work out which strategies have helped them and which words they still need to focus on. Spelling homework is given out on a Friday, as part of the weekly homework pack, and is expected back in on the following Friday. It is recommended that children try to practise their spellings for a few minutes every evening rather than trying to complete all of the spelling homework on one evening.
